When a file is deleted on a computer or the recycle bin
is emptied, all this does is simply remove the visual representation of the file
and tell your computer that you don't require the file anymore - the data is still
on your computer. Over time parts of your file are gradually over writen,
often leaving fragments of text. Using data recovery software it is possible
to view these deleted files. Tests on pre-owned computers often reveal old
documents, emails and private information.
Data erasure in this context can be described as; removing
data from an electronic medium. This can be done using a variety of techniques
depending on the storage medium in question and whether is is writable. The
techniques to be used can also vary depending on the time available, finance available,
and the level of security required.
Software Data Erasure
Many software data erasure products exist, some more reliable and functional
than others. Generally, the process of erasing data using software will consist
of writing over the existing data with different patterns of data - when done enough,
this can significantly and eventually completely remove any chance of recovering
private data.
There are many standards for the level of security provided by software data erasure
and I have explained some in this website. However it should be noted that the level of
security provided by little-known
software manufacturers should not be assumed,
and products such as this should only be used if tested and found to be secure.
Hardware Data Erasure
Two methods of hardware data erasure are used; shredding and degauzing.
-
The shredding process consists of literally passing the hardware medium through
a shredder or grinder, destroying the hardware. Generally this method alone
is considered secure enough for most data but when absolute security is required
this can be combined with degauzing.
-
Degauzing involves exposing the storage medium to high power magnets, wiping the
data - this cannot be guaranteed when, for instance, a hard drive is being erased,
as the casing may shield the device. This is why shredding and degauzing are
sometimes combined. Degauzing is also very expensive, as it is required to
be a reasonable safe distance away from other electronic devices, to prevent wiping
accidentally.
