Degauzing involves exposing storage devices to powerful magnetic fields, disrupting
any data held.
Degauzing is a much rarer method of data erasure than shredding or grinding, for
two reasons:
- Resources; Degauzing machines are expensive and require a large amount of free space,
as the powerful magnetic fields are likely to erase data on other devices nearby
And
- Results; With device casing varying, results from degauzing machines can vary.
This means that storage devices must be tested after degauzing to ensure that data
has been erased. This results in much added time as this process cannot be
automated.
Degauzing is most effective and most accepted when combined with shredding as this
allows the magnetic field access to more of the surface area of the storage device.
