Now becoming more widespread thanks to disk grinders for CDs and DVDs, shredding
is a very secure method of data erasure. Not only will it destroy a data storage
device usually beyond repair, but it will often disturb the magnetism, making the
data unreadable anyway.
High quality, efficient hardware shredding machines are very expensive - for a machine
capable of shredding hard drives at a reasonable rate and to a suitable size you
would expect to pay over £20,000.
When looking at hardware data erasure machine specifications, factors include:
- Speed; around 1 minute per hard drive would be acceptable.
- Waste size; the smaller the shredded parts, the less chance of data recovery.
- Maintinence; due to the power involved, machines require regular check-ups.
- Size; a capable hard-drive shredded is very large, often around 1.5 metres tall.
I have two high specification hardware shredders available.
