Security

DOD-5220, implemented by the US military, varies depending on the security classification of the data to be erased. Should the data be classified confidential, three random passes are required. This results in a quick erasure that is suitably secure for data that is unlikely to have attempted recovery.

Secret and top secret data should be physically destroyed or degauzed.
